Salmonhutch Lakes, Crediton.
18th Aug 2010

Dad had promised me a bit of fishing at some point in the summer holidays......he was really hoping that we could go to his syndicate water in Devon for a few days, but apparently they have changed the rules there and I'm not allowed to go with him. I was a little upset as I really wanted to go there, but dad reckoned there was somewhere else he could take me.

On Monday we packed the car with all our kit and drove down to Salmonhutch lakes in Devon. There are three 3 lakes on the venue and each one is slightly different. Unfortunately I was again not allowed to fish for the bigger carp as juniors have been banned from the Island Lake, their specimen pool.

Never mind I'm just happy to spend some time with my dad and do some fishing. We went around the lakes and it was really busy.....most of the swims were taken on the next lake, this only left Western Lake which the lady who owns the venue assured us was the same as the other lakes with some biggish fish in it too.

We got the gear out of the car which we were allowed to park right next to the lake. This was great for us and meant dad didn't have to lift anything far. The gear is heavy and a bit too much for me on my own....we both unloaded the gear and got set up in a nice spot at the end of the lake.

There was a great little stream outlet on the far side of the lake which we placed a rod each near and we threw some of dads mixed boilies from the freezer at home and a few handfuls of mixed shape, size and colour pellets.

Dad suggested we use fluorocarbon chod rig's which he showed me how to use. We attached a bright coloured pink pop up to one of my rods and a yellow pineapple one on dads rod. The reason we used chod rigs was that the margins of the lake are quite silty and the leads were bedding into the bottom when we cast out.

Dad said that the chod rig is great as it flies up the line away from the silt and sits just off the bottom. Dad used chod's on his other 2 rods and I used one of the special 'Goji Berry' special boilies we made a while ago.

I really enjoyed using my new rods and reels that dad got me a while ago. I have 2 Terry Hearn 2lb 9oz rods and 2 shimano baitrunners too. Dad also gave me some buzzer bars and 2 Delkim alarms as well.

The Goji boilies worked really well and I caught 2 of my fish on these. I love the smell of them too! The pink pop up caught me a nice common carp of 9lbs and dad had a little mirror on one too.....Dad also had a small common on the Goji specials too. Think we might make some more of them soon!

The weather was fairly warm by day but cold at night and there was quite a bit of rain too.... I really enjoyed the fishing and caught 3 fish in total. Dad had 2. We're hoping to go fishing again next week just for a day as dad reckons there's a good little lake near home where we can catch quite a few fish in the day. Can't wait, really excited about going again now.

See you all soon.

Junior Angle

It's been a while since I had some spare time to write for the website but lots of people have asked me to talk about the capture of my personal best carp which I caught earlier in the year.
To be honest It was a while a go now but numerous people have said I should put pen to paper as such!

Well, it all began at White Springs back in late April of this year. Dad took me down to fish for 2 nights and the weather was a real mixed bag. We had a fair bit of rain and some pretty unpleasant fishing conditions. We set up our rods in the swim called 'Megs Corner'. I put my rods out with some help from the old man! We placed the rods over to the right where there is a nice bank of overhanging trees and lightly baited the area with some of dad's new bait that we were testing out.

2 of our friends were down for the night so we had a good chat with them whilst fishing. Dad left me in charge of my rods alone for half an hour or so and whilst he was chatting to one of the lads, my right hand rod screamed off at a rate of knots! I jumped up from the chair where I was sat listening to my Ipod and the next thing I knew I was playing a good fish.....

Dad heard the commotion and ran over to help but I was quite happy to do it all myself this time.....The fish fought really well and took a little while to tire before dad was able to net it for me.
All dad's friends were amazed that I was able to play the fish by myself but to be honest it wasn't that hard!

We weighed the fish which looked massive! On the scales it weighed 25lb exactly.......well chuffed!!!!!

Anyway, dad sent the pictures to Anglers Mail, Angling times and Carp Talk...I was lucky enough to get into all three mags and I won a rod bag, a Nash cap and a spool of Nash Bullet line too.
Can' wait to get out again really soon.

Junior Angle

Junior Angle By Thomas Supple

My Dad has been pestering me to write something for the website for some time now. So, without delay here's the first installment of my 'Junior Angle'.
I hope you enjoy reading what I get up to this year and I would love to hear from you guys to see what your catching too.

Well, dad took me out for my first long session just before Christmas at White Springs Fishery. It's only my second time with the carp rods out. First trip was to Celtic Lakes last June, where I caught about 10-11 carp to 12lbs. I really wanted to learn how to cast and do a bit more for myself this time.

Dad gave me a set of really light rods to use which he had built last year. I had these to use as well as a set of lightweight baitrunner reels too.

I spent a few hours practicing casting overhead and underarm styles and I was really pleased to get to grip with casting overhead really well.

I think it's going to take me a while longer to get the hang of the underarm style of cast! Anyway with some effort and practice i've been casting about 50 yards, which dad says is pretty good for my age.

Dad had the first fish of the trip at 18lb 8oz and he let me play it out for the last couple of minutes. The rods he uses are too heavy for me and I found it quite hard to hold them! I still caught this fish though and dad was well chuffed with the fish too.

Things were quiet for a few hours until I had a bite on one of my rods to the island on one of dads Banana boilies. I Struck into the fish and had a good fight with a nice brown goldfish of 5lbs.

The first fish I have landed on a carp rod with no help!

We had lots of fish over the nest few days and my biggest was a 16lb 4oz mirror carp on one of dads polar plum boilies to the island.
I'm really looking forward to getting back out again in a few weeks time at half term.

Dads going to get me some new gear soon and I'm really looking forward to more carp fishing this year.

See you all soon
